specific dumping 'hot spots' and raise awareness of the issue amongst residents
and businesses.

of this valuable resource and to promote composting and compost use at

World Environment Day Awards
We sponsored the Local Government category of the World Environment Day
Awards 2006, run by the United
Nations Association of Australia.
This national awards program provides an opportunity for all sectors to
showcase the many important and exciting environmental projects developed
across Australia over the past year.
Clean Up Australia Day
Since 1990, WSN has accepted, free of charge, all waste collected by Sydney
councils on Clean
Up Australia Day. In 2008,
7,000 tonnes of waste were cleared from around 6,000 sites across Australia!
Keep Australia Beautiful
WSN is the foundation sponsor of the Waste
Watchers Program run by Keep
Australia Beautiful. Since
1994 Waste Watchers has increased the understanding of waste, litter and
stormwater issues for primary aged school children across NSW. Through
curriculum linked sessions, simple yet effective messages are communicated
to over 30,000 students a year. Our sponsorship goes towards production
of educational and display material, employing educators and transport
costs.
The Waste Watchers program is designed to support Local Government Authorities
in educating their local community in waste issues that are specific to
their locality. Participation in the Waste Watchers sessions empowers students
with the knowledge and skills to educate and influence their families as
well as adopting practices in their home environment, which have been explored
and demonstrated through the program.
WSN also partners with Keep Australia Beautiful through sponsorship of
the Clean
Beach Challenge.
This competition aims to enhance beachside communities by promoting personal
initiative, civic pride and environmental awareness and the program awards
provide recognition to people who care for their community and coastal
environment. The WSN Resource Recovery Award is granted for outstanding
accomplishment in resource recovery and management and for initiatives
by community, business and/or local government in promoting resource recovery,
managing waste materials and reducing packaging to protect our coastal
environments.

teams, whose members play on sports fields developed at the rehabilitated
landfill at Lucas Heights.
Support for National Tree Day
Each year our nursery at Lucas Heights donates native seedlings to local
school and community groups to plant on Planet
Ark’s National
Tree Day. Each year around
2,000 seedlings are provided to schools and groups including the Gandangara
Local Aboriginal Land Council.
The nursery commenced operation in 1994 to provide native plants for revegetation
of completed areas of the Lucas Heights landfill through collection and
propagation of local seeds.

Bankstown
City Council’s waste education
game called “Recycle: Act local, think global” was made possible thanks
to sponsorship from WSN. The game was developed by the Council to meet
the aims and objectives of the Environmental Education Policy for Schools

solve issues in the environment, adopt practices and behaviours to protect
the environment, encourage community participation and “Act locally –
