Fact Sheet: Macarthur Resource Recovery Park

Macarthur Resource Recovery Park is now in its commissioning phase, following the official opening on 4 July 2008. It is located at the site formerly known as Jacks Gully and is home to our Alternative Waste Technology (AWT) solutions, the Ecolibrium Mixed Waste and Ecolibrium Organics facilities.

It is the leading, fully integrated municipal waste management site in Australia and has been designed to process recyclables, organics and mixed solid waste from the Campbelltown, Camden, Wollondilly and Wingecarribee council areas. These four councils are the foundation partners in the Park.

Macarthur Resource Recovery Park achieves key environmental outcomes through a responsible, sustainable approach to waste management. By treating waste locally, the costs and environmental impacts of transport are minimised. More importantly, the Park’s facilities make waste work harder for the community and environment by converting it into valuable resources such as green energy and compost.

Facilities

The site consists of a suite of integrated facilities including:

  • Ecolibrium™ Mixed Waste facility designed to process up to 90,000 tonnes of household waste per year, diverting around 70% from landfill;
  • Ecolibrium™ Organics facility, a fully enclosed tunnel composting system designed to process 30,000 tonnes of organic material into mulch and compost products each year;
  • Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) for sorting up to 30,000 tonnes of recyclables per year;
  • Resident Drop-off Centre for disposal of recyclables, household waste and hazardous items by local community members and small operators;
  • Visitors Centre (currently under development) for engaging and involving the community in sustainable waste management through education and environmental awareness;
  • Revolve Shop for the sale of recovered items;
  • Retail Centre (currently under development) stocked with end-products from the Ecolibrium Organics facility, including compost, mulch and aggregate landscaping material; and
  • Landfill for inert waste.

Macarthur Resource Recovery Park is based on WSN Environmental Solutions’ Ecolibrium philosophy. Ecolibrium aims to balance environmental, economic and local needs with world-class technologies to create smart commercial solutions for waste management.
