Macarthur Recycling Facility Reaches Quarter of a Million Tonnes
17 April 2009
Leading Sydney recycler WSN Environmental Solutions has reached a major
milestone, processing a quarter of a million tonnes of resources in its
Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) at Macarthur Resource Recovery Park
at Narellan.
The resources recovered in the MRF include plastic, aluminium, cardboard
and glass – all valuable commodities that are sold to the manufacturing
sector to make new products.
WSN Environmental Solutions CEO Ken Kanofski said resources recovered from
waste are helping the manufacturing sector in its quest to become more
sustainable.
"Re-using resources like plastic, metal and glass recovered from the
waste stream helps to reduce reliance on raw materials," Mr Kanofski
said.
"This also avoids greenhouse gas emissions by recovering embodied
energy from these resources.
"The resource recovery process, when combined with the green electricity
production at our network of sites, significantly reduces our carbon footprint
on the local area."
Mr Kanofski said if residents had large volumes of recyclables they couldn't
fit inside their recycling bin, they could drop them off at the Macarthur
Resource Recovery Park free of charge, provided they were separated.
The Park will also accept untreated timber, garden organics, household
junk, furniture, mixed paper, plastic, glass, metal, timber, office partitioning
and other dry waste that does not contain organic material. For a full
list of acceptable materials, you can download our Pricing
Guide, or contact WSN's Customer
Service Centre on 1300 651 116.
The recovered resources are re-used where possible, with glass being sorted
by colour and made into new bottles and cardboard re-processed into new
boxes and packaging, while plastic from containers and milk bottles is
exported to China to manufacture a range of new products.
Steel and aluminium is sold to scrap metal recyclers and used by the manufacturing
sector to make new products.
