Mattress Recycling Service Reaches 22,000 Mark
31 March 2009
Leading Sydney recycler WSN Environmental Solutions and Dreamsafe Recycling
have experienced great success with their mattress recycling program, with
Sydney residents dropping off 22,000 mattresses at WSN sites throughout
Sydney.
WSN Environmental Solutions CEO Ken Kanofski congratulated Sydney residents
on their enthusiasm for recycling, saying their efforts helped to boost
resource recovery and divert waste from landfill.
“By recycling mattresses, we are able to recover valuable resources like
coil springs that can be melted down and on-sold to manufacturers, wood
that can be used to make biofuels and foam that can be used to make carpet
underlay,” Mr Kanofski said.
“Recycling 22,000 of these mattresses also means that we are saving thousands
of cubic metres of airspace in landfill.
“We would like to thank Sydney residents for making the effort to hand
in their old mattresses and encourage them to keep up the good work.”
Under the program, Dreamsafe Recycling collects old and unwanted mattresses
from WSN’s sites and extracts metal, wood and foam, while mattresses that
are still in good condition are restored and sold for re-use by hostels
and motels.
Mr Munro said the program is helping Sydneysiders take another small but
important step in the fight against climate change.
“Sydney residents are becoming increasingly conscious of their environmental
footprint and they want to see that nothing is wasted when they dispose
of unwanted household goods,” Mr Kanofski said.
Residents can drop off their unwanted mattresses at WSN’s facilities at
Artarmon, Auburn, Belrose, Chullora, Eastern Creek, Rockdale, Ryde, Seven
Hills and Jacks Gully (Narellan). For further information, click
